Origin and history

The ramparts of Villefranche-de-Conflent form a defensive complex built and remodeled between the 11th and 17th centuries, at a strategic location controlling the Tet and Cady valleys. Founded by the Count of Cerdagne Guillaume-Raymond, the city was girded in the 11th century by a wall flanked by towers, whose remains remain on the southern front. This site played a key role in the conflicts between the kingdoms of Aragon and Majorca in the 14th century, leading to significant reinforcements, such as the Devil's Tower (1441–145) under Alphonse V of Aragon.

In the 17th century, after the peace of Aix-la-Chapelle (1668), Vauban modernized the fortifications by adding four bastions, two gates (France and Spain), and a northern front along the Tet, while partially integrating the existing Spanish structures. He also designed fort Liberia to strengthen the defense of this gorge locking access to Spain. The enclosure, irregular, combines medieval elements (tours, courtines) and classical (bastions, crenellated galleries), with ditches limited to the southern part.

The ramparts and their surroundings were classified as historical monuments in three stages (1920, 1933, 1938), recognizing their heritage value. Protected elements include bastions, church-backed courtlines, and a 20-metre strip of land in front of a section of the walls. The property now belongs to the town of Villefranche-de-Conflent, while the architecture reflects the successive adaptations to military stakes, from the Comtal Defence to the Vauban strategies.
