Origin and history

The Renaissance Pavilion of La Roche-sur-Yon is a building dating from the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, located in the city centre, close to the Place de la Vieille-Horloge. This monument, inscribed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 14 April 1930, illustrates Renaissance architecture in Vendée, region of the Pays de la Loire. Its current location, between the rue du Vieux-Marché and the Place, reflects the historical urban planning of La Roche-sur-Yon, although its precise location has been discussed (noted as "a priori satisfactory" with a level 6/10 accuracy).

The protection of the pavilion in 1930 underscores its heritage importance, although available sources (such as Monumentum) do not detail its original use or its potential owners. This type of construction, typical of the Renaissance, could be used as an aristocratic residence, a hunting lodge or a place of representation, in a region then marked by the wars of Religion and a rural economy dominated by agriculture and local commerce.
