Origin and history

The residence Les Tourelles, located in Fort-de-France in Martinique, was built in the early twentieth century, more precisely in 1902 according to some sources. This building, of architectural style characteristic of colonial times, served as an official residence and was occupied by local administrative figures. His name is closely related to Felix Eboué, who stayed there between 1932 and 1934 while acting as governor of Martinique. This stay marks an important period in the history of this residence, which thus becomes a symbol of the administrative and historical heritage of Martinique.

The residence has been protected for historical monuments. In 1990, the façade and roof of the main building were inscribed, followed in 2012 by the inscription of the entire property, including annexes, garden and fence. However, this second protection was repealed in 2015, leaving only the partial protection of 1990 in force until a new registration in 2019. This 2019 registration now covers the entire residence, including its outbuildings and garden, highlighting its heritage importance.

Félix Éboué, a major figure in French colonial history, marked this residence by its passage. His role as interim governor of Martinique, and later as governor of Chad, where he played a key role in the rallying of French Africa-Equatorial to free France during the Second World War, adds a historical and symbolic dimension to this place. The residence Les Tourelles, although cancelled and then re-registered as historical monuments, remains an architectural and memorial testimony of that time.
