Origin and history
The residence of the Vieux Bains is a medieval building located in the Bass City of Provins at 7 rue du Moulin-de-la-Ruelle. Originally, they were ancient public baths built between the 12th and 13th centuries, a meeting place for all segments of the population, attracted by its supposed healing virtues. These baths, which fell into ruins in 1256, were restored in 1309 by Louis X, who laid stones in Paris, installed stoves, boilers and an oven.
The site reached its peak in 1311, when it rented 240 pounds, reflecting its economic and social importance. After centuries of abandonment, the two vaulted halls were classified as historical monuments in 1981, while the facades and roofs were inscribed in the same year. Renovated in 2004, the house is now a 5 ears guest house, combining heritage and tourism.
Historical sources, such as the Merimée base and Wikipedia, confirm its exact address and heritage protection. The building illustrates the evolution of hygiene and social practices in the Middle Ages, while embodying the architectural richness of Provins, a UNESCO World Heritage city for its medieval remains.
