Origin and history
The Marçon school restaurant, located in the Sarthe department in Pays de la Loire, is an emblematic building from the 3rd quarter of the 20th century. Designed between 1956 and 1958 by architects Le Corbusier and André Wogenscky, it embodies modern architecture with stilts, glass windows and concrete and red brick walls. Access is via a concrete ramp, and the wooden interior furniture was specially designed by the architects.
The project was commissioned by the commune of Marçon in 1956, marking an exceptional collaboration with Le Corbusier, a major figure in the modern movement. The building was first listed as a historic monument in 2002, and was classified in 2023, recognizing its heritage value. Its architecture, both functional and innovative, reflects the principles of the Corbusean, such as the use of stilts and the integration of furniture into the overall design.
The rectangular structure, entirely raised, illustrates an avant-garde approach to public equipment such as a school restaurant. The raw materials (beton, brick, glass) and the transparency of glass windows create a dialogue between interior and exterior, typical of modern aesthetics. The site, located on Chemin de la Demeie, remains today a rare testimony of the application of Le Corbusier's theories to a rural school program.
The building, owned by the municipality, is fully protected, including its interior fittings, stressing the importance of preserving both the architectural envelope and the furniture designed by Wogenscky. This 2023 classification replaces the initial registration of 2002, confirming its national heritage status. The Marçon school restaurant is thus part of the history of 20th century architecture, while serving as a local landmark in the Sarthois landscape.
