Origin and history
Miramont Castle, located in Barbaira, Aude, is a 11th and 12th century building whose remains include a wall section of the quadrangular dungeon, the walls of a chapel, and traces of two enclosures. Built at altitude on the Alaric Mountain, it served as an advanced post for the city of Carcassonne. Its origin may be from Carolingians or Wisigoths, although no studies have confirmed it to date.
In 1185, the castle was known as the birthplace of Chabert de Barbaira, an Occitan knight faithful to the cathars. During the crusade of the Albigeois in 1210, he was besieged without success by the Crusaders, according to the chronicle of Pierre des Vaux de Cernay, due to adverse climatic conditions. These events illustrate its strategic role in the religious conflicts of the time.
The site has been protected in two ways: listed as a historical monument since 1926 for its ruins, and classified as a natural site since 1942. Today, it is owned by the municipality of Barbaira and bears witness to medieval military architecture and the turbulent history of Occitanie, between seigneurial power and Cathar resistance.
