Origin and history

The Roman remains of Tarquimpol constitute an archaeological vestige located in the commune of Tarquimpol, in the Greater East Region. Although their existence is attested, the available sources do not specify their exact dating or their original function. These vestiges nevertheless testify to the Roman presence in this geographical area, typical of ancient settlements along the lines of communication or near strategic resources.

In the regional context of the Roman era, such establishments could serve as checkpoints, places of life or trade. The local population, probably composed of Roman settlers and Romanized Gaulish communities, organized its life around these infrastructures. The archaeological remains, such as those of Tarquimpol, today offer an overview of the social and economic dynamics of Roman Gaul, although their specific history remains to be explained by in-depth studies.
