Facades and roofs of the building; inside, all the common areas, namely: entrance hall, staircase with cage and ramp, cellars (cad. AC 211): inscription by decree of 19 January 1999

Origin and history

The Ribbe Hotel, built in the second half of the seventeenth century in Rognes, embodies the architectural influence of Aix-en-Provence in the surrounding villages. Its spatial organization and ornaments reflect the aesthetic codes of the era: a structured facade, an imposing entrance hall, and a stairwell decorated with stone balusters. The interior walls bear motifs incised in plaster, representing vegetal friezes and volutes, typical of Provencal Baroque style.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1999, the building protects its facades, roofs, as well as its interior common areas: the hall, ramped staircase, and cellars. These elements underline the importance attached to household monumentality, where the decorative apparatus serves to impress as well as to structure space. The location of the hotel, at 14 rue du Figuier, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, confirms its anchoring in a territory marked by cultural exchanges between Aix and its periphery.

The inscription in the inventory of Historic Monuments aims to preserve an architectural witness where the residential function and aesthetic ambition combine. The staircase, the centrepiece of the composition, symbolizes this duality: its studded decor, both sober and elaborate, guides the visitor to the floors while affirming the social status of the occupants. The accuracy of the location (valued at 6/10) and the photographs available under Creative Commons license make it easier to study and value this heritage.
