Origin and history
The ramparts of Rochefort, built in the 17th century in the town of Rochefort in Charente-Maritime (Nouveau-Aquitaine), originally formed a complete enclosure around the city. Their main objective was to defend the city against possible invasions, reflecting the strategic concerns of the time. Today, only a small part of these ramparts remain, the majority having been destroyed over the centuries.
The remains still standing, including the sections adjoining the old Porte Martrou, were registered as historical monuments by an order of 30 May 1930. This official protection recognizes their heritage and historical value. Military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, Marquis and fortification expert, is associated with their design, although his exact role is not detailed in the available sources.
The current location of the ramparts is approximately identified around 136 Bis Rue Pierre Loti in Rochefort. Their conservation status varies and their geographical accuracy is estimated to be "passible" (level 5/10) based on available data. These vestiges recall the importance of urban fortifications in the defensive organisation of French cities under the Ancien Régime.
