Origin and history
The Harkis house of Roussillon-en-Morvan, built in 1963, is a prefabricated building in fibro-cement, with an elongated rectangular plan, without foundation. It consists of six three-room units each with an outdoor toilet. This type of light, two-sided roof construction was typical of Algeria's post-war temporary habitats.
Between 1963 and 1966, this barrack sheltered harkis and their families in precarious conditions, under almost military supervision. In spite of this, the proximity to the village and the schooling of children in the communal school have enabled a more humane integration than elsewhere. After their departure, the sites served from 1967 to 1972 for the families of North African miners working at the Voltenne mine.
The barrack is the last vestige of Glenne's forest hamlet. It was classified as a Historical Monument in 2022 for its role in the social history of postcolonial France. Today, it belongs to the commune and symbolizes the challenges of welcoming displaced people after the Algerian war.
Its location, although unclear (level 5/10), is identified as 4 Rue du Centre Jean Gey in Roussillon-en-Morvan. The building, fully protected, illustrates a pivotal period of immigration and emergency housing policies in France.
