Origin and history

The raised stone of Picarel is a menhir located in the commune of Saissac, in the department of Aude, in the Occitan region. This granite monolith, conical in shape, reaches nearly 3.60 meters high for a perimeter of 5.50 meters at its base. Its origin dates back to the Neolithic period, during which local communities erected such monuments, probably linked to funeral, ritual or territorial practices.

Menhir was classified as historical monuments by order of 21 March 1949, thereby recognizing its heritage and archaeological value. This ranking is part of a desire to preserve the megalithic remains, numerous in the region. Available sources, such as Germain Sicard's work published in 1929 in the Bulletin de la Société préhistorique française, attest to its importance in the study of the megalithic monuments of Aude.

No specific information is available on the exact uses of this menhir by local neolithic populations. However, menhirs of that time were usually associated with symbolic or practical markers, such as landmarks in the landscape, gathering places, or elements of a belief system related to land and ancestors. The localization of the Picarel de Saissac, in today's rural environment, could suggest a link with ancient agro-pastoral activities.
