Cross of road near the cemetery, on the road to Bazelat: classification by decree of 24 November 1924

Origin and history

The road cross of La Chapelle-Baloue is a historic monument classified since 1924, located on the road to Bazelat, near the cemetery. It dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, with a remarkable structure: an octagonal barrel bearing a carved cross of a Christ under a trilobed archature. The pyramidal base rests on three steps, the last of which is connected to a rectangular granite altar, with a vaulted edge. Nearby, an octagonal seat in the shape of a fungus completes the whole.

The classification of this cross by decree of 24 November 1924 underlines its heritage importance. It belongs to the municipality and is characterized by architectural elements typical of medieval religious art, such as trilobed archature or granite work. The location, although specified by an address (Bazelat Road, 23160 La Chapelle-Baloue), remains of average accuracy according to the sources, with an estimated geographical accuracy rating of 5/10.

This type of road cross, common in French countryside, often served as a spiritual or commemorative landmark for travellers and residents. Its altar and seat suggest a liturgical or stopping function, reflecting the importance of religious practices in the daily life of the Middle Ages. The presence of a sculpted Christ reinforces its symbolic role, linked to the devotion and protection of places of passage.
