Stone and marble cross of 1803 on the road to Hamère-Lullin: classification by decree of 30 March 1906

Origin and history

The road cross of Villard is a religious monument located in the rural landscape of the commune of Villard, in Haute-Savoie. Dated from the 1st quarter of the 19th century, it illustrates the importance of Christian symbols in public space at that time, often erected at crossroads or along paths to mark a place of prayer or gathering. The cross of paths, frequent in Savoy, served both as a landmark for travellers and as a support for popular devotion.

Their presence reflected the community and religious life of the villages, where collective practices (processions, blessings) rhythmized daily life. These monuments, often sober, were also local identity markers, strengthening the link between territory and faith.
