Stone road cross of the 16th century: classification by decree of 12 August 1909

Origin and history

The road cross of Autigny-la-Tour is a stone monument erected in the 16th century, located in the department of Vosges, in the Grand Est region. It is located on the road from Autigny to Montigny, close to Rue de Martigny. This type of cross, common in the countryside, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for travellers and local inhabitants.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 12 August 1909, this cross is now the property of the commune of Autigny-la-Tour. The road crosses, typical of rural heritage, often marked places of assembly, crossroads or territorial boundaries. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Christian faith in the daily life of the village communities of the time.

The location of this cross, although documented, is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5 out of 10 depending on the sources). It is mentioned in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 88019, attached to the commune of Autigny-la-Tour. No further information is available on its sponsor, iconography or possible subsequent restorations.
