Origin and history

The engraved rock called Latour 2, located in Coma d'Ayrevals near Latour-de-Carol, is a remarkable historical monument with 61 panels and 714 drawings. Among these engravings are 11 Iberian letters and 298 naviform signs, 28 of which are complex, concentrated on the south side of the rock. These elements attest to an occupation and symbolic or cultural activity during the Protohistory, with traces of ancient writing and characteristic geometric motifs.

A Latin inscription "Exupère", potentially dated from the 5th century (High Middle Ages), suggests reuse or appropriation of the site at that time. Medieval engravings, on the other hand, are distinguished by anthropomorphic representations, such as warriors in arms, as well as scenes illustrating characters dressed in costumes evoking the end of the Middle Ages (XVth–XVIth centuries). These medieval additions reflect a thematic diversity, mixing symbols, life scenes and military elements.

The rock was officially protected by an order of 2 December 2014, which includes both the engraved rock and the basement of Parcel A 448. This protection underlines its archaeological and historical importance, while preserving a fragile heritage rich in information on the cultural and artistic practices of protohistoric and medieval periods in the Oriental Pyrenees.
