Origin and history
The Moutier-d'Ahun Bridge, often mistakenly called the Roman Bridge, is in fact a medieval building built in the 12th century. It crossed the Creuse River below the village, and consists of five arches: three in the middle of the hangar and two slightly ogival. The ensemble, about 200 meters long, is entirely built of granite stone, with the exception of stone-frames. This bridge was a strategic crossing point, replacing an earlier Gallo-Roman ford or structure, on a track connecting Limoges.
Ranked as a Historic Monument in 1920, the bridge underwent minor modifications, such as the recent widening of the village-side road, partially altering its pier to the ground. Its architecture combines unextracted arches with apparent keys, typical of Romanesque techniques. Although described as "Roman" by local tradition, its style and dating confirm its medieval origin, reflecting the importance of communication routes in this marshy Limousin area.
The Moutier-d'Ahun site, which had been occupied since ancient times, was a Gallo-Roman communication node where several routes converged, including the one leading to Limoges. The present bridge is part of this historical continuity, reflecting successive reconstructions since the 11th century. Its role was crucial to cross the Creuse, a flood-prone river, in a territory marked by monastic activity since the founding of the Benedictine Abbey in 997 by Boson II, Count of the Marche.
