Origin and history

The ruins of St. Lawrence Church constitute a 12th century architectural vestige, located in the hamlet of La Motto, on the territory of the commune of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Barrière. This monument, now partially in ruins, illustrates the Romanesque style characteristic of the rural churches of the Poitou-Charentes region, integrated since 2016 in New Aquitaine. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 6 December 1948 underlines its heritage importance, although the available sources do not specify the circumstances of its degradation or abandonment.

In medieval times parish churches like St. Lawrence played a central role in the lives of rural communities. They served not only as places of worship, but also as a gathering point for collective decisions, religious holidays and important events in local life (marriages, baptisms, burials). The Charente-Maritime, then integrated into the province of Aunis and Saintonge, was marked by an agricultural and wine-growing economy, where religious buildings structured the landscape and social life.

The absence of detailed documents on this specific church does not allow to reconstruct its local history, but its architecture and location suggest a foundation linked to the rise of rural parishes in the 11th and 12th centuries.
