Castle (ruins): by order of 12 December 1910

Origin and history

The ruins of the Château de Montmorot, located in the eponymous commune of the Jura department, date from the 12th century. This monument, now partially in ruins, illustrates the medieval castral architecture of the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Its location, near Lons-le-Saunier, suggests a strategic role in the control of local communication channels at that time.

Ranked a Historic Monument by ministerial decree of 12 December 1910, the castle of Montmorot is subject to heritage protection for its remains. Available data, particularly from the Merimée database, indicate an approximate location at 11 Place de la Liberté, although geographical accuracy is considered to be satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). No additional information is provided on its past uses, its owners, or specific historical events being carried out.

In medieval times, castles such as Montmorot generally served as defence points, seigneurial residences or local administrative centres. In the Jura, a region marked by varied reliefs and important trade routes, these fortifications played a key role in the feudal organization. Their construction often reflected rivalry among lords or the need to protect surrounding populations and agricultural resources.
