Origin and history
The ruins of Gaston Phoebus Castle, located in Sauveterre-de-Béarn, have been a historic monument since 2014. This vicomtal castle, whose remains include an inner courtyard, a barbacan and traces of ancient ditches, bears witness to medieval defensive architecture. Its location in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques reflects the strategic importance of the region throughout the centuries, although the precise details of its construction and use remain partially documented.
The castles such as Sauveterre-de-Béarn played a central role in the feudal organization of Aquitaine. They served as military checkpoints, seigneurial residences and symbols of local power. The surrounding population, mostly rural, lived under the authority of the Viscounts or Lords, whose decisions directly influenced economic and social life.
These fortifications were also places of refuge in the event of conflict, reinforcing their importance in collective memory.
