Origin and history

The Ruissas fort house is a building representative of the seigneurial and rural architecture of Vivarais, located in Colombier-le-Vieux, in the department of Ardèche. Its initial construction dates back to the second half of the 16th century, between 1560 and 1566, before being redesigned during the 17th century. The facade on the courtyard, with a gallery, bears the date of 1660, reflecting the architectural changes of this period.

The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 7 November 1996. This protection applies specifically to the house (including its floor and the fence of the courtyard), the facades and roofs of the communes, as well as the fence of the courtyard of the communes. These elements reflect the heritage importance of the site, both for its history and for its architecture characteristic of the region.

The Ruissas fort house is part of a historical context marked by the evolution of rural habitats in Ardèche. At that time, the fortified houses served as both a seigneurial residence and a symbol of local power, while meeting the defence and agricultural needs of the communities. Their presence illustrates the social and economic organization of Vivarais between Renaissance and modern times.
