Origin and history
The church of Saint-Antoine de Fixey, located in Fixin en Côte-d'Or, is a jewel of Burgundy Romanesque architecture, marked by its lava roof and bell tower covered with varnished tiles. Consecrated to St.Antoine (Antoine the Great, 251-356), it has been listed as a Historic Monument since May 2, 1912. Its origin dates back to 902, when a Romanesque oratory was erected on this site by the abbey Saint-Bénigne de Dijon, then evolving into a church. It represents the oldest Romanesque building in the Dijon region.
The chapel, built of partly coated stone bellows, features an apparent nave with beams illuminated by bays in the middle, and a vaulted apse in cul-de-four added in 1720. The bell tower, pierced with bays and surmounted by a square arrow, dates back to the 15th century. In 1861, the chapel was attached to the parish of Fixin, after belonging to Saint-Bénigne Abbey. Its entrance has a rectangular door adorned with a glittering Greek cross, while a side door displays an arch in a braid with the tau of Saint Anthony.
Fixey, located on the Grands Crus road in the heart of Burgundy vineyards, was originally an outbuilding of Saint-Bénigne Abbey in Dijon. The GR7 hiking trail today runs along the building, highlighting its anchoring in the cultural and historical landscape of Burgundy. The chapel thus illustrates almost a thousand years of religious and architectural history, from its founding oratory to its classification as the Historic Monuments.
The protected elements include the entire chapel, with its furniture and structure, as described in the 1912 classification order. The property now belongs to the town of Fixin, and its official address is referenced as 10 Rue du Docteur Laguesse.
