Origin and history
The church of Saint-Arige-et-Saint-Vincent-de-Saragosse de Péone came into being in the 11th century, when a first church was built. This place of worship, located in the department of the Alpes-Maritimes, preserves medieval traces like a lintel dated 1550 and two lateral chapels with dogives cross, remains of the old nave disappeared during later transformations.
In the 18th century, the church was completely rebuilt in 1761 according to the plans of architect Pietro Antonio Santo Bartolomeo, master mason from Lugano. This reshaping gave him his Greek cross plan and his hexagonal dome surmounted by a lantern, characteristic of baroque influence. The interior decor, including stucco, retables and canvases from the 17th and 18th centuries, reflects this aesthetic.
The building was added to the additional inventory of historic monuments on November 29, 1948, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the municipality of Péone, the church houses remarkable furniture, such as a pulpit to preach, a Christ on a cross, and a high altar, testimonies of its central role in local religious life since the Middle Ages.
