Origin and history

The Saint-Aubin Church of Criel-sur-Mer is a Catholic church built between the 14th and 16th centuries, replacing a 12th century building destroyed in 1474 by the troops of Charles the Temerary. In the 15th century, a chapel was added, and major reconstruction took place in the 16th century. The stone, sandstone and flint building is a typical example of the religious architecture of this period.

In 1863, after damage caused by lightning, the vault of the choir collapsed, resulting in a restoration that ended in 1890. The church was listed as historical monuments on April 14, 1930. Major work was carried out in the 1990s to restore the structures, masonries and covers. In 2017, a stone drop revealed the need for additional structural work.

The church houses a 16th century altarpiece and is known for its many marine graffiti. It has three bells named Marie-Germaine, Michelle-Louise and Françoise-Geneviève, weighing 758 kg, 548 kg and 378 kg respectively. Its Latin cross shape and materials make it a remarkable architectural heritage of the Seine-Maritime.

Located at 129 Rue de la Libération, it is the property of the municipality of Criel-sur-Mer. Its history is documented in sources such as Monumentum, Wikipedia and the Merimée base, highlighting its cultural and religious importance in the Norman region.
