Church with the calvary and arch of the cemetery (cad. E 195, 197): by order of 3 July 1916

Origin and history

The church of Saint-Cuffan de Pluguffan, located in Finistère in Brittany, is a religious building built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It is distinguished by its architecture, including its bell tower which overcomes the triumphal arch at the entrance to the choir. This bell tower, equipped with a belfry worn on a gable, extends by corbellation and supports an octagonal arrow, characteristic of the constructions of this period in Brittany.

The belfry is accessible by a circular staircase grafted on the gable, an architectural element typical of the Breton churches of this period. The building, classified as Historic Monument by order of 3 July 1916, also includes in its protection the ordeal and arch of the adjacent cemetery. These elements reflect the religious and community importance of the church in local life, serving both as a place of worship and as a gathering for the inhabitants of Pluguffan.

The location of the church, specified as being at the 10 Venelle of the Church in Pluguffan, is indicated with an accuracy deemed a priori satisfactory (level 6/10). The building belongs to the municipality and its current status regarding the opening to the public or possible ancillary uses (rent, guest rooms) is not specified in the available sources. The photograph of the monument is awarded to Rundvald under Creative Commons license, illustrating his heritage and cultural interest.

Brittany of the 15th and 16th centuries was marked by a strong religious identity, where parish churches played a central role in the social and spiritual organization of the communities. Monuments such as St. Cuffan Church served not only as places of prayer, but also as visual and symbolic landmarks in the rural landscape. Their construction and beautification often reflected the local prosperity, supported by the gifts of the faithful or lords, as well as the work of local artisans specializing in stone carving and carpentry.

At that time, the region was also influenced by popular artistic and architectural currents, such as the flamboyant Gothic, visible in some details of Breton churches. Calvary and parish enclosures, often associated with churches, bear witness to this cultural richness and popular devotion. The church of Saint-Cuffan is part of this context, representing a religious and historical heritage for the municipality of Pluguffan and its surroundings.
