Origin and history

The Saint-Denis church of Arnouville, located in Val-d'Oise, is a neoclassical work by architect Jean-Baptiste Chaussard, completed in 1782. It replaces a medieval church founded in the 11th century, located in the park of Arnouville Castle. This project is part of an urban restructuring of the village desired by Count Jean-Baptiste de Machault d'Arnouville, which also includes the reconstruction of the castle and the village around circular squares. The church, sober and devoid of carved decoration, is distinguished by its decorated facade and its doric interior colonnades.

Count Jean-Baptiste de Machault d'Arnouville, the keeper of the seals and chief financial officer of Louis XV, initiated this ambitious project around 1750. Architects Pierre Contant d'Ivry and Jean-Michel Chevotet, then Jean-Baptiste Chaussard after their death, contributed to this. The church is irregularly oriented, with a bedside to the northwest, and its bell tower, a simple openwork tower, dominates the building. Inside, the space is structured by colonnades and a majestic altarpiece dedicated to Saint Denis.

The church was listed as a historical monument in 1986. It preserves a contemporary furniture of its construction, including false marble baptismal fonts, a confessional, and 19th century hagiographic stained glass windows. Today, it depends on the parish of Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix and hosts monthly Masses. Its sober architecture and side-tables, inspired by the portal, make it a remarkable example of the religious neo-classicism of the late eighteenth century.

The painting of the altarpiece, representing Saint Denis preaching at the gates of Paris, was signed by Larriel. The side altarpieces, dedicated to Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary, reproduce the architectural motifs of the portal. The church, although not very decorated, illustrates the influence of the Enlightenment on religious architecture, with a search for simplicity and symmetry.

The original project provided side windows to illuminate the choir, but these were replaced by fake bays. The sacristy, a part of the apse, prevents any natural light in this part. Despite these adjustments, the church maintains a stylistic unit, marked by the absence of superfluous decor and the rigour of its lines.

The church Saint-Denis is a testament to the rural urbanisation of the Enlightenment, where architecture and territorial planning combine to create a harmonious ensemble. Its inscription in historic monuments underscores its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its integration into the urban landscape of Arnouville.
