Origin and history

Saint-Denis de Berville Church, located in Val-d'Oise, is a composite building built over three distinct periods. The Gothic choir, dated the 13th century, has no vaults and has a sober architecture. It was followed, at the beginning of the 16th century, by the construction of the transept and bell tower in a flamboyant Gothic style, characterized by simple arcades and a curved vault evoking older techniques. The nave and its north side, built around 1547-1559 during the reign of Henry II, reflect the influence of the Renaissance, with ivy vaults and keys adorned with royal symbols and inspired motifs of the Écouen castle, although the attribution to the sculptor Jean Goujon remains hypothetical.

The Western gate, added in 1552, is a remarkable example of the Second Renaissance, with a doric peristyle and a pediment decorated with carved heads expressing sadness, perhaps linked to a mourning of the sponsor, René de Bucy, local lord close to Anne de Montmorency. The interior of the church reveals architectural contrasts: the nave Renaissance, bright and elegant, contrasts with the austere Gothic choir, simply capped. The retables of the 16th century, classified as historical monuments, illustrate religious scenes and saints, while statues, such as that of the Virgin with the Child, testify to the artistic richness of the period.

Ranked a historic monument in 1920, the church is now attached to the parish of Avernes and Marines, with only two annual Masses. Its furniture, partially stolen in the 20th century, includes 16th century baptismal fonts and fragmentary wall paintings. The building, marked by post-revolutionary changes, such as the connection to the diocese of Pontoise in 1966, remains a testimony of the architectural and religious evolutions of the French Vexin, between the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
