Origin and history

The church Saint-François-de-Sales d'Ambilly is a Catholic religious building located in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It was built in 1941 under the impulse of Abbé Albert Marullaz, at the site of an ancient chapel erected near a cross planted in 1597 by Saint Francis de Sales, emblematic figure of Savoy. This place of worship thus perpetuates the memory of the saint, patron of the church, and is part of a local tradition dating back to the end of the sixteenth century.

The present building was consecrated in November 1941 by the bishop of Annecy, Auguste Cesbron. Although a bell tower project has been envisaged, it never comes into being. In 1971, the church underwent a complete restoration, marking an important step in its architectural and religious history. Today, it remains a testimony of the spiritual and historical heritage of the region.

The church is integrated into the Savoyard religious landscape, dominated by the diocese of Annecy. Its history is closely linked to that of the local parish and to the devotion to Francis de Sales, an emblematic saint of the region. The cross of 1597, always associated with the site, recalls the modest origins of this place of prayer, transformed in the twentieth century into a parish church in its own right.
