Origin and history
The church Saint-Georges de Chivres-Val is a religious building located in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Its origins date back to the 12th, 13th and 16th centuries, with a nave and low side of the 12th century, a 13th century southern chapel, and a 16th century bell tower. This monument illustrates the medieval and Renaissance religious architecture of the region, marked by varied stylistic influences.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 15 October 1919, the church suffered significant damage during the First World War. It was then reconstructed identically, preserving its architectural heritage. This ranking reflects its heritage value and its role in local history, particularly in the context of conflict-related destruction.
The present structure of the church includes characteristic elements of each period of construction: the nave and lower side of the 12th century reflect the Romanesque style, while the 13th century southern chapel and the 16th century bell tower introduce Gothic and Renaissance elements. These stylistic superpositions make it a remarkable example of the architectural evolution of rural churches in Picardia.
The church Saint-Georges is now owned by the municipality of Chivres-Val. Its official address, 3 Place de l'Église, makes it a central point of the village. Although the sources do not specify its current status (opened/closed to visit), its ranking and post-war reconstruction underscore its cultural and historical importance to the local community.
