Origin and history

The church of Saint-Germain de Pantin found its origins in the 12th century with a primitive chapel, mentioned in 1210 by a priest named Peter. In 1649, a royal ordinance prohibited offices for security reasons, pushing for a major reconstruction. On April 30, 1662, the Abbé de Richelieu and the parish priest Guillaume de Carlu undertook to finance the chorus repairs, while the inhabitants took over the nave. The plans, drawn up by Michel Villedo, provide a structure in stone and stone, with doric pilasters. The first stone was laid on 23 June 1664 by Pierre Forcoal, master of petitions, in the presence of vicars Guillaume de Carrelu and Nicolas Fermanel.

The works, awarded to the Parisian masons Guillaume Huby and Michel Bernoin for 12,500 pounds, begin in a climate of financial tensions. A 25-year dispute between the inhabitants and Abbé de Richelieu resulted in a sentence in 1689 condemning him to pay 2,000 pounds. In 1736, the bell tower threatening ruin was rebuilt by Joachim Beausire, followed in 1813 by the transfer of the adjacent cemetery. In the 19th century, developments such as the perron (1826) and the installation of three bells (1825) complete the building, while the adjoining presbytery houses houses, barns and stables.

In the 20th century, the church, which became state-owned in 1905, was threatened by ground instability: a 55-metre vacuum was discovered under its foundations in 1971. Ranked a historic monument in 1978, it benefited from major consolidation campaigns from 1982 onwards, including the resumption of foundations (1983-1984) and the restoration of stained glass windows (1991-1995). In 1994, the youth chapel was rebuilt for 6 million francs, divided between the state, the city and the diocese. The work continues with the rehabilitation of the porch (1996) and the restoration of the organ (2003-2004), marking its long-lasting anchor in the local heritage.

The interior has been home since 1960 to a tapestry of Léon Zack, glorious Christ, commissioned by the parish priest André Mathé to replace the altarpiece demolished in 1959. Produced by the Plasse Le Caisne workshop, it symbolizes the artistic renovation of the church. In 2006, a plaque was affixed by Mayor Bertrand Kern, sealing his heritage status. However, the church is also associated with recent controversies, such as the appointment in 2022 of priest Jacques Gagey, accused of sexual assault, before his removal from office.

Architecturally, the church combines elements of the seventeenth century (nave and chorus of doric order) with additions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (clocher, gate, fence). Its classification in 1978 saved the building from demolition, despite structural cracks linked to unstable soil. The restoration campaigns, financed by the state, the region, the department and the commune, illustrate the collective commitment to preserve this witness of the religious and urban history of Pantin.
