Origin and history

The church of Saint-Gervais de Courteuil, located in the Oise department in the Hauts-de-France region, is a Catholic building whose origins date back at least to the early thirteenth century. Its oldest part, the choir with a flat bedside, dates from this period and features a primitive Gothic style. In the 16th century, the church was enlarged by the addition of two collaterals, one to the north (flamboyant Gothic style) and the other to the south (Renaissance influences), reflecting the architectural evolutions of the period. These transformations have created stylistic diversity, while preserving a remarkable spatial unity in the eastern parts.

Courteuil, mentioned from the Carolingian period, was linked to the abbey of Saint-Denis by a donation from Charles II le Chauve in 860. The seigneury depended on the Bouteiller de Senlis until 1346, then on the princes of Condé. The parish, attached to the Diocese of Senlis, experienced periods of population decline, especially during the Hundred Years War, leading to the reunion of the parishes of Courteuil, Fontaine-Saint-Firmin, Saint-Nicolas-d'Acy and Valprofond in the 15th century. The church, listed as a historic monument in 1970, is home to notable furniture, including two rare places in the region.

The choir, initially devoid of low-sides, was modified in the 16th century by the addition of lateral chapels. The northern chapel, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, has flamboyant cul-de-lampe, while the southern chapel, which is more elegant, has renaissant influences. The nave, dated from the 16th century despite an inscription of 1603 on a foothill, preserves late Gothic elements. The church has undergone restoration thanks to the action of a local association, and it remains an active place of worship within the parish of Saint-Rieul in Senlis.

Among the classified furniture items are a 14th century statue of the Virgin with the Child, baptismal fonts of the same century, and two gissants, including that of knight Guy de La Tour, considered the founder of the church. The funeral slab of the parish priest Jean Matlyn (1480) presents a transi, rare macabre representation. The church was also marked by events such as the blessing of bells in the eighteenth century and acts of vandalism during the Revolution.

The exterior of the church, described by historians as "razed", presents a 16th century western portal in basket cove, surmounted by an empty niche and an oculus. The foothills, characteristic of the different construction periods, highlight the architectural evolution of the building. Despite its modest appearance, the church of Saint-Gervais de Courteuil offers a valuable testimony to the religious and architectural history of the region, combining rural simplicity and rich heritage.
