Origin and history

The Saint-Jean de Dorres church is the main religious building in the village of Dorres, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department. It is distinguished by its partially Romanesque architecture, typical of the region, and is dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist. Its central role in local parish life makes it an emblematic monument of Catalan religious heritage.

Although the sources do not specify its date of construction, its Romanesque style suggests a medieval origin, probably between the 11th and 13th centuries, a flourishing period for this type of architecture in Roussillon. The churches of that time served not only as places of worship, but also as gathering points for rural communities, playing a major social and spiritual role. Their preservation bears witness to the historic importance of these buildings in the organization of the Pyrenean villages.
