Origin and history

The church Saint-Jean de Lurais is a Catholic building located in the commune of Lurais, in the department of Indre, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. It depends on the archdiocese of Bourges and the parish of Tournon-Saint-Martin. Built between the 12th and 17th centuries, it presents an initial cruciform plan, with Romanesque elements such as two vaulted bays in a cradle and a tower at the cross of the transept. These vestiges date from the beginning of the 12th century, when the church would have been part of a priory dependent on the abbey of Saint-Cyprien in Poitiers.

A second construction campaign, probably at the end of the 12th century, added three broken cradle spans forming a flat bedside choir. In the 15th century, a chapel was added, followed by another chapel on the north side in the late 15th or early 16th century. Around 1657, a collateral was built to the south and a vestibule to the north, giving access to the chapel of the Virgin. The priory, initially linked to the abbey of Saint-Cyprien, probably ceased its activity in the early seventeenth century, transforming the church into a parish building.

Saint John's Church in Lurais was listed as historic monuments on March 11, 1987. It is now owned by the municipality of Lurais and is located at the approximate address of 14 Place des Tilleuls. Its architecture reflects stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs over centuries, from the Romanesque period to the modern period.

The site is listed in the Merimée database under cadastral code 1946 B 19. The building is associated with the natural region of Blancois, west of the Indre department. Its historical and architectural characteristics make it an important witness to the local religious heritage, marked by successive monastic and parish influences.
