Origin and history

The Church of Saint John the Evangelist is a Catholic church located in the Ray district of Nice. It was built to meet the spiritual needs of an expanding local population in an area undergoing urban transformation after the Second World War. Its architecture reflects the modern trends of the era, marked by a search for simplicity and functionality in religious buildings.

The church was inaugurated on 24 June 1978, officially marking its opening to the public. It takes the place of the chapel Sainte-Croix, located 500 meters further south, near the Place Fontaine-du-Temple. The latter, deemed insufficient or inadequate for the needs of the neighbourhood, was demolished in 1969, leaving room for this new, more spacious and modern place of worship.

The Ray district, where the church stands, is a residential area of Nice developing during the Thirty Glories. Religious buildings of this period, such as Saint-Jean-l'Evangelist, often play a central role in structuring new neighbourhoods, providing a place for community and spiritual gathering. Their construction is part of a dynamic of rapid urbanization and modernization of local infrastructure.
