Origin and history

The Saint-Josse Abbey of Dommartin was founded in the 12th century by the Order of Regular Canons of Premontré, under the leadership of Adam, elected Abbé in 1131 after the death of Milon. The work of the Abbatial Church, of primitive Gothic style (89 m long), began in 1153 on the north side of the Authie Valley. The abbey was transferred to Dommartin in 1161, and its consecrated church in 1163. Pharamus de Tingry, local lord, made an important donation there in 1170-1171, including the tithe of Sumbres.

In the 13th century, the abbey extended its estate thanks to bequests and concessions, despite conflicts with the heirs ofHugues Colet. In 1249 she obtained the administration of the altar of Mouriez. After the destruction of the Spanish invasions of the 16th and 18th centuries, buildings were rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. The abbey was abolished at the Revolution, its goods sold as national goods.

Today, the remains (gates, convent buildings, farm, dovecote) have been protected since 1991. Lapidary elements, such as 12th century capitals or a tombstone of Abbé Girard Blaset (after 1385), are preserved at the Picardie Museum. The site, a private property, bears witness to the pre-demonstrated religious architecture and its evolution over six centuries.
