Origin and history

The church of Saint-Laurian de Vatan, located in the Indre department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a Catholic building whose Romanesque origin has been profoundly transformed over the centuries. Originally collegial, it was reworked in the 16th century with the addition of a flamboyant polygonal choir, funded by Canon Pierre Dubreuil in 1537. The side chapels, also added in 1537, housed stained glass windows relating the life of Saint Laurian, whose fragments still remain today. Of the medieval building, only the choir and woodwork of the front door, dated 1498, survived the collapse of the bell tower in 1882.

The front door, dated 1498, is a sculpted masterpiece: its six upper panels feature flamboyant interlaces and the coat of arms of the Lord of Vatan, while the twelve lower panels are decorated with towels. The nave and transept, rebuilt between 1880 and 1890 by architect Henri Dauvergne, integrate a Gothic portal of the late 15th century re-used on the western facade. The collapse of the bell tower in 1882 required partial reconstruction, however preserving the most valuable historical elements.

The church's stained glass windows illustrate several artistic campaigns. In 1871 the Lobin workshop took place, but the majority of the creations date from the late 19th century, after the reconstruction of the nave. Between 1900 and 1904 Joseph-Prosper Florence and Louis Heinrich created eight glass windows with characters for the lower side, while the Gouffault workshop, in collaboration with André-Louis Pierre, created eight Art Deco windows in 1935 depicting scenes of Christ's life. These works, arranged according to a narrative cycle, adorn the upper part of the nave.

The church of Saint-Laurian was partially classified as historical monuments: the choir and the front door were inscribed by decree of 8 December 1928, while the apse was inscribed on 13 March 1933. These protections reflect the heritage value of a building marked by centuries of history, combining medieval heritage, flamboyant renaissance and 19th century restoration.

Today, the church depends on the archdiocese of Bourges and the parish of Vatan. It remains an active place of worship while attracting visitors for its eclectic architecture and its remarkable stained glass windows, reflecting the artistic and religious evolutions of the Berrichonne Champagne.
