Origin and history
The Saint-Laurent church of Prusly-sur-Ource is a Catholic religious building located in the Côte-d'Or department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It is distinguished by its Romanesque portal, dated from the boundary between the 11th and 12th centuries, which was inscribed in historical monuments by decree of 21 June 1927. This portal, decorated with plant and animal motifs, is the only vestige of the original medieval church, bearing witness to its age and heritage importance.
In 1853, the bell tower's arrow was redone after the tower was expanded, marking a significant first phase of renovation. Then, in 1888, a more ambitious campaign of work led to the demolition and reconstruction of the structures and the cover, initially in lava, as well as to the enhancement of the former gable. These interventions have profoundly altered the structure of the building, while preserving some historical elements.
In the middle of the twentieth century, the church underwent partial reconstruction, integrating modern elements while preserving ancient parts, such as the Romanesque portal. The sanctuary, illuminated by a rosette pierced in 1851, and the unique nave with a glassed ceiling in a broken cradle, illustrate successive architectural developments. Liturgical furniture, including a polychrome statuary and stained glass windows, was also preserved and inventoried as a cultural heritage.
The building houses a rich collection of religious objects, such as 16th, 18th and 19th century statues, stained glass windows depicting biblical scenes, and paintings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Among the notable pieces are a 16th century Virgin with the Child, an 18th century cross Christ, and a remarkable pulpit decorated with polychrome figures. These elements, inscribed in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage, underline the artistic and historical value of the church.
The portal, the only element protected by historical monuments, embodies the link between the medieval past of Prusly-sur-Ource and its religious heritage. Subsequent transformations, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries, reflect the adaptations of the building to the liturgical needs and architectural norms of each era, while preserving its historical identity.
Today, the Saint-Laurent Church remains an active place of worship and a testimony of the architectural and artistic heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Its history, marked by successive reconstructions and enrichments, makes it an emblematic monument of the commune of Prusly-sur-Ource and the Châtillonnais region.
