Origin and history

The Saint-Laurent collegial church of Salon-de-Provence, located on the northern limit of the city centre, is an emblematic religious building in the region. Built in 1344, its history is marked by interruptions and reconstructions linked to historical hazards, including the black plague and the collapse of its bell tower in the 15th century. It was incorporated into the city walls in the 16th century, reflecting its strategic and spiritual importance.

The building of the church, begun in 1344, was quickly interrupted by the plague epidemic that ravaged Europe in the 14th century. The works did not resume until the beginning of the 15th century, but the bell tower collapsed shortly after its completion. A third reconstruction campaign began in 1432 and ended in 1480. This long process reflects the technical and financial challenges of the time, as well as the perseverance of local people and authorities.

Ranked a historical monument in 1840, St. Lawrence Church illustrates medieval and reborn religious architecture. In the 19th century, it was enriched by the erection of the Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Esperance statue in 1867, reinforcing its role as a place of devotion. Its location, between Boulevard David and Square Jean-XXIII, makes it a central point of the cultural and religious life of Salon-de-Provence.

Historical sources, such as the works of Bernard Montagnes and Denis Bruna, underline the importance of this collegiate in the Provencal architectural landscape. Its early classification (1840) and its mention in bases such as Mérimée or Clochers de France confirm its heritage value. Today, it remains a symbol of the city's resilience and medieval heritage.
