Origin and history
Saint-Léger de Saint-Chamas church, located in the Bouches-du-Rhône, was built between 1660 and 1669 by the Aixois architect Pierre Pavillon. Its Provencal Baroque style is particularly distinguished by its facade, while its bell tower, erected on pilingis in 1730, adds an architectural singularity. The monument is based on unstable soil, which required consolidation work in 2017, including the renovation of facades, bell tower vaults and stained glass windows.
The church has been listed as historic monuments since 1957, recognizing its heritage value. Recent work aimed to preserve its fragile structure while restoring its iconic elements, such as stained glass windows and the bell tower. This monument illustrates the baroque religious architecture of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, as well as the technical challenges associated with its geographical environment.
The building, owned by the commune of Saint-Chamas, is located on Rue Voltaire, although sources also mention an approximate address at 7 rue Jeanne d'Arc. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments by decree of 6 December 1957 protects the entire church, including its interior and exterior elements, ensuring its conservation for future generations.
