Origin and history

The Saint-Louis de Huningue Church, located at 23 Barbanègre Street, has been a historic monument since 1938. Built according to the plans of engineer Jacques Tarade, it is the only important vestige of the old fortress built by Vauban between 1679 and 1680. Both garrison church and military building, it introduced in Alsace new architectural forms for the time. Its hybrid status reflects its role in the religious and defensive life of the stronghold.

Historical sources diverge over its exact date of construction: some, like J. M. B. Clauss, suggest 1680, while P. Stintzi proposes 1686. The building, probably disused in 1934 when the new church of Christ the King was built, lost its liturgical furniture in 1936. Damaged by shelling in 1944, it was restored between 1971 and 1975. Today, its facades, roof and bell tower remain protected as historical monuments.

The church illustrates the military and religious heritage of Huningue, a strategic fortified town on the Alsatian border. Its architecture, marked by the influence of Vauban and Tarade, bears witness to the innovations of the period. Now owned by the municipality, it retains a major heritage value, although its current use (visits, rental) is not specified in the available sources.
