Origin and history
The church of Saint-Marcel-et-Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, located in Chauffour-lès-Bailly in the Aube department, is a religious building built mainly in the sixteenth century. It is distinguished by its wood-paned architecture and its five-paned apse. Initially a branch of the church of Marolles-lès-Bailly, it depended on the diocese of Langres and the dean of Bar-sur-Seine. In 1544 it was served by three priests and was under the special control of Troyes.
In 1886, a first restoration campaign was carried out, including the repair of the attices, the exterior foothills, the pavement of the nave, and the consolidation of the structure of the gallery. Two windows of the sanctuary were rebuilt, and a hard stone threshold was laid at the entrance. The church was listed as historic monuments on May 29, 1926, recognizing its heritage value.
In the 20th century, two other phases of restoration marked its history: in 1990, the facade and the gallery (where local notables are resting) were renovated, and in 1997, major works touched both the interior and the exterior of the building. Among its remarkable furniture, a 16th-century statue of St Marcel, from a nearby chapel dedicated to a source, is preserved there.
