Origin and history
The Saint-Martin de Lavall Church is a Romanesque church located in the hamlet of La Vall, in the commune of Sorède, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales. This monument, integrated with the rural landscape of Roussillon, bears witness to the medieval religious architecture of this region of southern France.
A major restoration campaign was undertaken in 1992 to preserve this building. These works were completed in June 2017 with the consecration of a new altar table by Bishop Norbert Turini of Perpignan. This table houses a relic of Saint Gauceric, highlighting the continuing spiritual role of the church. The employers' festival, celebrated on November 11, also perpetuates local traditions related to this place of worship.
The Saint-Martin de Lavall church is part of a wider set of Romanesque churches in Roussillon, often unknown but representative of the religious and architectural history of the region. Its existence illustrates the importance of rural hamlets in the medieval territorial organization, where these buildings served as gathering points for the surrounding agricultural and pastoral communities.
