Origin and history

The Saint-Maurice church of Saint-Maurice-sur-Adour is a Catholic religious building located in the Landes department in New Aquitaine. Dating from the 16th century, it is distinguished by its flamboyant Gothic architecture, notably visible on the gables-adorned portal, sheltered under a porch surmounted by a dome-shaped bell tower. This portal gives access to a nave where there is a picture depicting the martyrdom of St.Mauritius, patron saint of the parish and legendary commander of the Theban Legion in the third century.

Inside, the furniture includes several notable elements: a painting illustrating Saint Peter paying the denier to Caesar, statues of two unidentified bishops (perhaps Saint Augustine or Saint Eutropus, and Saint Fulgence), as well as a Renaissance-style baptismal tank. A waxed wooden cross path completes this ensemble, reflecting the artistic and spiritual importance of the building to the local community.

The church is part of the Christian architectural heritage of the Landes, mixing late medieval heritage and Renaissance influences. Its decor and furniture testify to local devotion and regional artistic traditions, while honouring the memory of Saint Maurice, a central figure in his parish history.
