Origin and history

The Saint-Michel du Héron church is an ancient funeral chapel built in 1868 by architect David de Penanrum, whose only known work is the church. This monument, built in brick and limestone, adopts a neo-Byzantine style marked by a 20 metre high campanile. Inside, there are decorative elements such as marquetries, statues and columns.

Acquired by the commune of Heron in 1982, this funeral chapel is transformed into a parish church. It was classified as historic monuments on 31 August 1989, recognizing its heritage importance. Its architecture, combining Byzantine and Italian influences, makes it a unique building in the region.

Located in the Seine-Maritime department in Normandy, Saint-Michel church illustrates the evolution of religious and architectural practices in the 19th century. Its history also reflects the shift from private use (burial) to community use (parochial church), typical of the transformations of religious buildings at that time.
