Origin and history

The Saint-Nicolas Church of Strasbourg, located at Saint-Nicolas Pier in the Finkwiller district, is an emblematic Protestant building in the historic centre of the city. Built between 1387 and 1454 on the site of an ancient Romanesque church dedicated to Marie-Madeleine (founded in 1182 by knight Walther Spender), it replaces a place of worship erected on the remains of a small Roman fort. This monument, representative of the upper Rhine hall churches, was enlarged after the plague of 1381 and completed under the direction of architect Diebolt Mosung in 1454. Its tower, covered by an arrow tapered in 1585, still dominates the urban landscape.

The interior of the church preserves remains of 15th century frescoes, rediscovered under a badigeon, as well as a wooden gallery of the period. The sanctuary underwent major changes in the 16th century, while the facade and sacristy, works by architect Emile Salomon (known for Temple Nine), date back to 1905. The historic organ of the Silbermann brothers (1707), disassembled in 1967, showed its rich musical heritage. Ranked a historic monument in 1995, the church now houses a charismatic Protestant community, perpetuating its spiritual and cultural role.

The history of Saint-Nicolas was also marked by illustrious figures, such as Albert Schweitzer, who served as pastor and celebrated the wedding of Theodor Heuss, the future German president, in 1908. Other theologians and academics, such as Georges Casalis and Charles Théodore Gérold, have left their mark. The site, searched in the 20th century, revealed Roman and medieval archaeological traces, confirming its importance since ancient times. Its architecture thus combines Gothic heritage, renaissance and modern restorations, reflecting the religious and urban evolutions of Strasbourg.
