Saint Nicholas Cross (Case AD 122): Order of 11 December 1979
Origin and history
La Croix Saint-Nicolas is a cross located in the commune of Vouhenans, Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Built during the first quarter of the 16th century, it is a typical example of the monumental crosses erected during this period in France. Its classification as a historic monument in 1979 reflects its historic significance and value.
The monumental crosses, such as that of Vouhenans, were often erected at crossroads, village entrances or near churches. They served as visual cues, religious symbols and sometimes as gathering places for local communities. In the 16th century, the Haute-Saône, then integrated into the county of Burgundy, was marked by a rural society where the Church and local lords played a central role in social and spiritual organization.
The Saint-Nicolas cross is now protected and belongs to the municipality of Vouhenans. Its precise location, at 42 Rue Desault, as well as its official classification by order of December 11, 1979, make it a significant element of local heritage. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a historical monument and its location in the department of Haute-Saône.
