Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de Saint-Pierre-de-Cormeilles, located in the Eure department in Normandy, finds its origins in the thirteenth century. Its initial construction reflects the architectural style of this period, marked by sober lines and a structure adapted to liturgical needs. The building underwent major changes in the 16th century, including the addition of roofing panels in the nave and choir, as well as structural changes that incorporated Renaissance influences. These changes reflect the changing artistic tastes and needs of the local community at this time.

In the 19th century, the church was the object of ambitious works: the bell tower was erected in 1855, a sacristy was added, and the nave bays were redone. These interventions are designed to modernize the building while preserving its historic character. The same time saw the installation of a cemetery cross, strengthening the central role of the church in the social and spiritual life of the village. The furniture, enriched over the centuries, includes notable pieces such as a 19th century harmonium, a silver chalice of the early 20th century, and wooden statues of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Among the most remarkable elements are fourteen wooden reliefs of the seventeenth century, representing the Apostles and theological virtues, as well as two angel musicians of the same period. These works, both artistic and symbolic, illustrate the importance of religious iconography in teaching and devotion. The glass windows, some of which were created by François Décorchemin in 1953, add a luminous and colourful dimension to the building. A medieval glass roof, dating from the 13th century and representing the Lamb of God, is a rare testimony of the glass art of that time.

Liturgical furniture also includes objects related to the brotherhoods of charity, such as chaperons and a procession banner, highlighting the active role of these groups in parish life. The statues, such as the Virgin with the Child (XVIth century) and Christ on the Cross (Bois, 16th century), as well as the high reliefs, reflect the piety and craftsmanship of past times. These elements, preserved until today, make the Saint-Pierre Church a place of exceptional memory and heritage.
