Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-des-Martyrs de Genac, located in the Charente department in New Aquitaine, is a Catholic religious building whose origins date back to at least the twelfth century. Attributed in 1110 to the cathedral chapter of Angoulême, it was entirely rebuilt in the thirteenth century in a characteristic Gothic style, with a unique nave covered with a crib broken in stone. This monument, marked by sober architecture, is distinguished by its flat bedside and rectangular bell tower overlooking the west facade.

The interior structure of the church consists of three spans forming the nave, extended to the east by a fourth vaulted span to eight quarters, constituting the choir. The latter opens laterally on two chapels, one to the north and one to the south, adding to the symmetry of the building. Classified as historical monuments by order of 24 December 1980, the church now belongs to the municipality of Genac-Bignac and bears witness to the influence of the Angoulême chapter in the region.

From an architectural point of view, the church illustrates the transition between Romance and Gothic, with elements such as the broken cradle typical of this stylistic evolution. Its rectangular bell tower and flat bedside reflect the aesthetic and functional choices of 13th century builders. Although the sources do not specify its exact use over the centuries, its classification in 1980 underlines its heritage importance for the Charente and New Aquitaine.

The available data also mention an approximate location at 1 Place de l'Église, in an environment now integrated into the municipality of Genac-Bignac. Map accuracy is estimated as "passible" (level 5/10), indicating a known but potentially perfectable location. No information is provided on its current accessibility or possible contemporary tourist or cultural uses.
