Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul d'Orgeval, located in the Yvelines, has its origins in the 11th century, of which only the western gate remains today. A major reconstruction took place in the middle of the 12th century, under the impulse of Agnes de Montfort, with the building of the bell tower and the abside, characteristic of Romanesque architecture. These elements, still visible, mark the transition to a more monumental structure.

In 1490, the nave was completely redone, and a transept was added, accompanied by a chapel in its north arm. Around 1510, a second chapel was built in the south arm, and a northern collateral, with a portal dated 1549, completed the building. These transformations reflect the evolution of liturgical needs and the influence of late Gothic style. The bell tower, classified as Historic Monument in 1886, bears witness to the early heritage importance of the site.

The 19th century was marked by several significant restoration campaigns. In 1815, the departmental architect Montjardet rebuilt the belfry, while between 1845 and 1847, Blondel son led a major restoration of the bell tower. Later, between 1867 and 1874, the roofs and vaults of the north were redone, and Ludovic Renou added two filling windows on the southern wall of the nave in 1874. These interventions illustrate the ongoing efforts to preserve and adapt the building to the standards of each era.

The church also houses the monument to the dead of the parish, highlighting its central role in local collective memory. Its inclusion in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1962 devotes its heritage value, while protecting the integrity of its structure, with the exception of the already classified bell tower. Today, it remains an active place of worship and an architectural witness to the stylistic and historical evolutions of the region.
