Origin and history
The church of Saint-Romain de Saint-Romain-la-Virvée came into being in the 12th century, when its façade was erected, some modillons above the south wall and the first span of the nave. These elements attest to a medieval foundation, probably linked to a pre-existing Gallo-Roman cemetery. The monument, classified as a Historical Monument, thus preserves architectural traces of this pivotal period between late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.
Between the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century, the last three spans of the nave were rebuilt, marking a first phase of expansion of the building. This change reflects the evolution of the liturgical or demographic needs of the local community. At the beginning of the 17th century, a lower side was added to the south, illustrating a new adaptation of space, perhaps linked to the rise of the parish or changes in religious practices.
In 1769, the chapel of the baptismal fonts was built north of the nave, introducing remarkable decorative elements. The two arcades of the entrance door and of this chapel are surmounted by semicircular stone frontons, decorated with bas-reliefs representing the Lamb and Christ with the Samaritan. These sculptures, typical of 18th century religious art, highlight the symbolic importance of baptism in parish life.
In the 19th century, a porch was built to protect the 18th century southern entrances, while a new bell tower was erected from 1900 on, modernizing the silhouette of the building. The ossuary at the corner of the northern collateral and sacristy, as well as the two monumental gates of the cemetery (18th century), decorated with bas-reliefs representing the Resurrection of Christ and an elongated character, testify to the persistence of local funeral and artistic traditions.
The church, registered in the Historical Monuments by decree of 29 April 2005, now belongs to the commune. Its architectural history, marked by successive additions, reflects the religious, social and artistic evolutions of Saint-Romain-la-Virvée over nearly nine centuries.
