Origin and history

The Saint-Saturnin church of Saint-Cernin-de-Larche, classified as a Historical Monument, has its origins in the 12th century. Originally, it consisted of a unique vessel, with a flat-side choir arched in a cradle. Its transept, built on a square plane, is covered with a dome on pendants, a rare example in the perigordin type region. This transept, without arms, has one side adorned with archatures, while the other was modified in the 14th century to add a chapel.

The nave, also from the 12th century, was vaulted in the 14th century, illustrating the architectural evolutions between these two periods. The 12th century Romanesque portal, accompanied by carved models, marks the entrance to the building. The dome, supported by four slightly broken doubles, rests on pendants, a distinctive technique contrasting with the more common tube domes in the region. These architectural features reflect the various influences that marked its construction.

The church was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 28 October 1926. Today it belongs to the commune of Saint-Cernin-de-Larche, in the Corrèze department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its state of conservation and its openness to the public are not specified in the available sources, but its heritage importance remains recognized, notably for its unique dome and its blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles.
